CASE STUDY: ADIDAS X NORDSTROM FIFA WORLD CUP

The activation reached nine major US markets as the country prepared to welcome the world. With athletes, artists, and a stunt double moving between multiple locations, the campaign called for a beauty direction able to adapt to the production’s scale and momentum.

Adidas took over 35 Nordstrom stores nationwide for the 2026 FIFA World Cup’s return to North America. Under the teaser “The News Is Out,” Emma Roberts and a cast of local creatives, skaters, and cultural figures brought the tournament into New York’s street culture.

CULTURAL CONTEXT

The beauty intervention has to establish an authentic visual signature that reflects diverse communities, celebrating both everyday athletes and the historic legacy of the Adidas "Three Stripes.”

The World Cup holds a mythology larger than the game itself. Adidas balances collective identity with individual expression, framing sport through the human side of its athletes. This philosophy shaped the beauty direction for the Nordstrom partnership.

THE INTERVENTION

This strategy respected the individuality of each athlete, artist, and performer while maintaining a unified group identity. Challenging traditional sports imagery, the makeup brought a distinct supermodel refinement to the pitch. Featuring Ice Queen eyeshadows, defined glass-like lips, and a core focus on Vitamin C-driven skin prep, the intervention celebrated the human side of the campaign's athletes and artists, keeping their complexions fresh, radiant, and resilient during outdoor movement.

Led by Hair and Makeup Department Head Ann Gior, the intervention elevated cosmetics from a passive aesthetic element into an active narrative driver. Embracing a "Grunge Subverted" creative framework, the intervention bridged the gap between luxury runway artistry and mainstream commercial production. The hair architecture referenced the effortless sophistication of late-90s runway culture, blending Tom Ford-era Gucci influences with polished ponytails, 1920s swirl bangs, and Y2K Micro-Braids.

STRATEGIC APPROACH

Unpredictable weather demanded constant adjustment to preserve the looks and maintain a cohesive vision throughout.

The main strategic challenge was managing the operational complexity and scale. Ann Gior directed both hair and makeup with an eight-person team, covering 18 talents across multiple Manhattan locations, requiring speed and flexibility to adapt in real time. Unpredictable weather demanded constant adjustment to preserve the looks and maintain a cohesive vision throughout.

AUDIENCE & CONSUMER INSIGHT

The campaign succeeded by recognizing that the modern fashion consumer no longer separates street style from high-end retail. By presenting the collection as an authentic piece of World Cup culture—rather than a generic corporate tie-in—the partnership successfully converted sports enthusiasm into premium retail purchases.

The strategy targeted two powerful demographics:

• The "Blokecore" Enthusiast: A young, trend-conscious urban consumer who views sportswear through a lifestyle.

• The Premium Athleisure Shopper: Nordstrom's core luxury demographic, which seeks elevated, versatile closet staples.

CULTURAL IMPACT

The campaign proved that global brand activations can still feel profoundly local and community-focused. It established a fresh creative benchmark for future major sporting tournaments. The project demonstrated that luxury department stores can authentically engage with massive global sports moments without losing their premium identity.

"The News Is Out" shifted the paradigm for how major sporting events are celebrated in luxury retail spaces. The campaign effectively solidified soccer-jersey culture within the luxury retail landscape. It took elements of European and South American terrace style and seamlessly translated them for the North American fashion market.
